Amp Fiddler Feat. Neco Redd and T3 on “Return of the Ghetto Fly” (Produced by J. Dilla)

Amp Fiddler

Amp Fiddler is one of those musicians who really should be a household name. The pioneering multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and record producer has been making music for a long time, starting in his native town of Detroit in a funk band called Enchantment and then being a member of George Clinton’s Parliament-Funkadelic from 1985 through 1996.

His debut album Waltz of the Ghetto Fly was the catalyst to him working with Moodyman, Jamiroquai, Prince, Was (Not Was), the Brand New Heavies, Fishbone, Corinne Bailey Rae, Maxwell, Raphael Saadiq, Meshell Ndegeocello, and legendary reggae producers Sly & Robbie on the Inspiration Information album. He once said of his debut album title, “When I was kid, I used to see older guys walking down the street with a stride. They were waltzing a certain way — neighborhood style, to get respect.” His music is classic Detroit soul with modern electronic funk and his vocal style has a unique raw grit to it, that is soulful, playful, and funky. Most notably, Amp was responsible for introducing the Akai MPC sampling drum machine to J Dilla in the early stages of his career.

Now with his sixth solo offering Amp Dog Knight, Amp’s first single “Return of the Ghetto Fly” is a continuum of his debut album, featuring arrangements from J Dilla, Detroit singer, Neco Redd, and T3 (the only surviving member of J Dilla’s Slum Village). With Amp Dog Knights scheduled to release in November on Moodyman‘s label Mahogani, we can be certain it will be an ode to the Motor City, that is Detroit!
