Goapele hit the scene on the tail end of the neo soul movement with her debut album Even Closer in 2002 and has maintained a solid presence. For an album that was release 15 years ago, it has received over 66 million plays on the fairly new platform, Spotify. Now with her sixth release, Dreamseeker EP, Goapele touches on many styles and emotions, and says in her official press release for the EP, “I’m a woman, but I am also a whole person.” “Secret” pays homage to the late Aaliyah using the hook of “Are You That Somebody?” with an electronic bass and drum claps. The lead track “Power” produced by Cornelio Austin (K-CI & JoJo, Chris Brown, Busta Rhymes), was written for her daughter, a song about strength and realising ones inner power. The special touches to the EP come in the form of interludes produced by Mike Tiger. “Bright as the Sun (Interlude)” is a gorgeous blend of acoustic guitar, with minimal drums and percussion as Goapele voice layers in harmonies. BJ the Chicago Kid makes an appearance on “Stay,” a tender song of wanting a moment to last longer. “Stand” produced by Bedrock is a political wake up song where Goapele sings, “Just stand up for something / Don’t fall down for nothing / If we don’t stand for something / We’ll fall for anything,” which is quite apropos to the times we’re living in right now. The last track “Cool Breeze” is classic Goapele, with its drag and pull, while feeling just like a cool breeze. Check it out below.
