De La Soul Wear Their “Royalty Capes” in New Video

A behind-the-scenes video of De La Soul on tour, shot by J. Ander Urmacher.

The legendary rap group, De La Soul give us the third visual treatment for the single “Royalty Capes,” taken from their crowdsourced album Anonymous Nobody which was released in the summer of 2016. The video starts with Dave “Plug Too” Jolicoeur detailing his battle with congestive heart failure, setting a rather melancholic tone to the visual piece. “Royalty Capes” was the first song the group recorded when they started the production of and Anonymous Nobody. The track features a nine-bar loop of a saxophone that represents the entrance of royalty and the group carries the theme throughout the track, with Kelvin “Posdnuos” Mercer stating, “Us three be the omega like fish oil / This royal right we own, no rental.” The video, directed by J. Anders Urmacher takes us through their world tour in France, Brussels, Holland, Belgium, London, the US, and Toronto. Actress and spoken word artist Gina Loring performs on the track, “We are an army of stars unleashed / The sky takes notes when we speak / Our capes move with the wind / Because of the wings beneath / This is royalty.” They are indeed hip-hop royalty and can wear their capes with pride.
