Mass Appeal Proves De La Soul Is Not Dead [Documentary]
De La Soul Is Not Dead, the Mass Appeal produced documentary on the legendary rap group De La Soul is perfectly timed to coincide with all that’s happening with them now. A little over a week, the trio released their ninth album …and the Anonymous Nobody, which was crowdfunded raising over half a million dollars. The album shot to the number one spot on the Billboard charts, affirming the documentary’s title. De La Soul Is Not Dead gives an unabashed account of the group’s musical journey, from the release of their seminal debut 3 Feet High & Rising in 1989. They added a new dimension to rap music through positive messages of unity, peace and love, pushing the envelop with alternative sounds forming the acronym D.A.I.S.Y. Age – “Da Inner Sound, Y’all”, which later caused the group to be labeled hippies.
The documentary calls on a host of people who were instrumental to De La Soul’s early success. From friend and producer, Prince Paul, former presidents and CEO of Tommy Boy Records, Monica Lynch and Tom Silverman, and A&R Executive Dante Ross, various producers, most notably, J. Dilla. The film brings to the forefront their legal and creative challenges and their evolution in sound.
