After listening to De La Soul‘s “Drawn” featuring Muphoric Sounds’ favourite Swedish indi band Little Dragon, we had to take pause. It’s that good! The two groups met while on the Gorillaz tour back in 2011 as both appeared on the Plastic Beach album, so naturally, a synergy was formed. On “Drawn,” the simplicity of the plucking string arrangement simultaneously played along with keys and the soft vocals of Yukimi Nagano, to the overall pace as the track grows in scope and sound, is pure perfection. At one point, you do wonder, “Where’s De La on this joint?” Then the music changes slightly with a heavier groove, as Dave chants “Time to move on, to move on time…” and the rap perfectly kicks off with Posdnous reflecting on life, touring, and what it turned him into, all in one powerful verse. “You could lose the love of your life, through a lifetime of love on tour / I didn’t mean to be a whore / but my hormones had me like a fiend / Screaming what you got for me? / Two words, I’m mortal, but the fans slide em both together and removed the apostrophe.” Yes! We’ve been drawn in.
This is the fifth track De La Soul have shared since they pushed the release date of their forthcoming album and the Anonymous Nobody to August. It is sure to be one of the highlights of 2016, with collaborations to come from David Byrne, Damon Albarn, Usher, Pete Rock, 2 Chainz, Jill Scott and more. Check it out below and listen to all five minutes and 33 seconds. Time well spent!
