It’s been a while since we heard new music from the super talented Southern California native iSHE. Her last collaboration was with Philly producer HEZEKiAH on the HEZEKiAH Project, where their most notable song, “Hold On” gained the interest of Georgia Anne Muldrow who proceeded to give the track powerful funk based remix and a stunning visual treatment featuring Australian dance duo Tannos and Choice.
Who Is She EP is an acoustic guitar project of three songs, written, performed, and arranged by iSHE, with guitar played by Verdell. The songs are raw in texture, where she calls on the spirit energies of Minnie Riperton, Lalah Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, D’Angelo, SADE, Cody Chestnutt, Bilal, Cassandra Wilson, and many more, to guide her through the three songs of improvised adventure. Opening with “Love,” you hear tremors of The Fugee‘s “Sweetest Thing,” where she sings about the cycle of love and love being the only way to be, with a guitar solo at the end reminiscent of William DeVaughn‘s “Be Thankful for What You Got.” The second song, “Holy Ghost” takes us to the blues, telling her lover, her friend, or even child, that they’re going to need someone hold them, to give them the strength to deal with the world. “Gang Related” is the more alternative in arrangement where the guitar is not so much of a rhythm but an energy that flows through the song, as iSHE sings about having a bond that is so deep with someone, you become family—with an analogy of a family being a gang, and strong friendships can be the same.
