John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced today, that veteran rapper and producer, Q-Tip will join the institution as its artistic director for hip hop culture for its 2016-2017 season. Hip Hop will also be added to the center’s core programming. With this year being the 100th year of John F. Kennedy’s birth, the president of the center, Deborah Rutter, in her first season of programming has devised a year-long roster that will celebrate the president’s legacy of courage, freedom and social justice. After Kendrick Lamar‘s performance last year with the National Symphony Orchestra, the center finally realised just how much of a force Hip Hop is and has been. “I want to begin at the beginning of the Culture to help people see its roots, better understand its present, and responsibly create its future,” Q-Tip said in a statement. This appointment could not have gone to a better person. For something that was thought of as a fad; forty years on, Hip Hop is still strong!!
