A couple days ago, Janelle Monáe tweeted this song with the preamble, “If Radiohead x D’Angelo had a baby it would sound like this.” You put the two together, you’ve got my attention and he comes in the form of Roman GianArthur, chief composer and arranger of Monae‘s seminal debut album The ArchAndroid Suite. His voice is very similar to Bilal, with a definite control and precision marred in blues. You can feel the passion and pain, and joy in his fusion of Radiohead‘s “High & Dry” (also covered by Bilal in the past) and D’Angelo’s “Send It On.” In June this year, Roman performed his own set at the Toronto Jazz Festival, to rave reviews. As the Wondaland website aptly expressed, Roman is “melody mind control.” Therefore stand at attention; the Roman GianArthur ride will be an adventurous one! Check out the audio below!
