Today is Record Store Day 2011 – from Kilawatt Music (Audio)

Saturday, April 16th, 2011

Internationally celebrated Record Store Day, the third Saturday in April, is a day where stores across the globe give special offers, hold events, and some record companies unearth oldies, goodies, and use the day as an opportunity to release previously unreleased music. Kilawatt Music has done so with the release of this 7″ with two widely unheard tracks from DC songstress Muhsinah and London producer Ben Jones, originally on the now defunct label The songs are two strikingly contrasting musical styles—Ben Jones‘s “Stereosine” is raw funk instrumental that gentle plays with experimental sounds with a dubstep flare; Muhsinah‘s “Are In Be” never fails in providing interesting vocals – her harmonies are always beautiful. The 7″ is available from Kilawatt’s Online Store and exclusively from from today, April 16th. Check the tracks out below and purchase some music today!

Eric Lau – “Star Trekking” (Free Download)

Monday, February 7th, 2011

We all would love to have intergalactic powers, but unfortunately, we don’t. After being inspired by the book, Quadrivium: Number Geometry Music Heaven—a book which looks at the relationships between the number, geometry, music and cosmology as a way of understanding the nature of reality (sounds heavy…MUST read!)—UK producer Eric Lau, sat before his mixing table and created Quadrivium; an exploration of these concepts. “Star Trekking” is that tune—you have to sit with it, listen to it, and bask in it as your mind travels through space and sounds. Quadrivium is set to release Feb 25th on Kilawatt Music through iTunes, Spotify, eMusic with a limited press in vinyl. Check out the tune below and watch the short video where Lau talks about Quadrivium – it will open you up!

Full Crate – “The Barb” EP featuring Mar (Audio)

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

My first reaction to The Barb was, “YES! Broken beat is on the rise again!” For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Broken Beat sound, it started as a small collective of producers based in London called Bugz in the Attic. They created a movement in music which became a staple in the underground dance scene, with a sound that was laced in soul, jazz, funk, and afro-beats, with extraordinary and original vocalists laid over the tracks. To this day, I never understood why this particular genre fizzled out.

So in comes Full Crate, hailing from Amsterdam, who is part of the Dutch music collective of beatmakers; he was responsible for the luscious track “She Was Fly” with Eric Robeson. His latest project, The Barb confirms that broken beat isn’t going anywhere. In fact, Broken Beat is wherever it’s kept alive. The two-song EP, features the beautiful smooth vocals of MarFull Crate‘s longstanding musical partner—with great instrumental sequencing, sprinkled with jazz, funk, hip hop, electronica, and soul, set to a tempo to make you move. I want more!!! The good news is, Mar is working on some projects with Full Crate; so stay tuned for more vibes like this from Kilawatt Music.

The Barb is available on the Kilawatt Bandcamp page, at a ridiculously low price, and is also available on vinyl. Only 300 copies have been pressed; so DJ’s better get on it!

Love this little promo for “Let’s Funk This Motherf*cker” as well…check it out!
