As we patiently wait for J*DaVey to release their forthcoming album The New Designer Drug, they have given us a little music to build anticipation.  This two song teaser, “Whatchalookin@” and “Kill 4 Fun” stays close to what the dynamic duo have been doing of late, embracing an 80s, new wave sound. What I love about this duo is their distinct sense of self and originality. Jack Davey now sporting her baby bump, while uncle Brook D’Leau dotes on; they have a good connection. The second video from their Evil Christian Cop: The Great Mixtapes, “Quickstand” demands to know “Who do you love?” With Jack Davey sporting gothic style gear, and see-through plastic, stranded out in a hot desert, with her counterpart Brook D’Leau styled a la Clockwork Orange, while iLLaV8r‘s Def Sound kicks his verse comparing a woman’s body to Dali as the group ebb around. J*Davey‘s videos are always a visual treat, pushing boundaries either in theme or composition. The video is directed by The Ports.

Got to give it to J*DaVey on this video!! “Raincheck” being one of my favourite tracks off the The Evil Christian Cop mixtape, due to its staple J*DaVey dose of sexy. Although Brianna sings about wanting a rain check, the visuals, directed by John Mazyck, is quite to the contrary. Let’s just put it this way, it looks like a successful “leg over”; no preceding walk of shame. Love these guys!

J*Davey have been off the radar for a minute. The last release we received from them was the start of their The Great Mixtape series last April, starting with Boudoir Synema.  The Evil Christian Cop — a 5-song EP, that’s available for free download — begins with a soft pop-like down-tempo cover of Nivana‘s infamous “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” which compliments Jack‘s voice; the staid version brings forth how great a song it will always be.

With the release of this mixtape, J*Davey announced their tour, which kicks off in San Francisco through to Austin for the SXSW music conference in March, in April they’ll tour the East, and then in May they’ll tour Europe. Fellow West Coast rapper blu will join them during the tour. (*San Francisco date is March 10th at 330 Ritch and the New York date is April 5th at S.O.B.s.) I’m quite looking forward to this as I’ve never seen them live and heard they give a great show.

In December, J*Davey released their Boudoir Synema: The Great Mistapes on their Bandcamp page for free download, and one of the songs which stuck out was “Get Together.” Glad to see a the video for it, directed by Dr. V-Chip. Always an interesting duo to watch.

I have to take a late pass for posting this now but will use the excuse of holiday season commitments. West Coast duo, J*DaVey put Boudoir Synema: The Great Mistapes on their Bandcamp page on Christmas Day for free download. It is classic J*DaVey, with Brianna Davey‘s buttery and sultry vocal style on “Get Together” and Brook D’Leau‘s dirty sexy groove; it’s a lovely treat. The uptempo “Outta the Window” reminds me of 80s new wave Prince.

Back in September, MTV started an initiative for viewers to choose from 4 artists to breakout on their program “I Want My Music” for MTVU  with J*DaVey being one of the artists. We all voted, and didn’t hear a damn thing on its progress or what the outcome was (the actual micro-site built for the voting has since been shut down – I guess music does not live on MTV anymore). I’m glad J*DaVey received some exposure as they are a rare talent. So get your free download of this 5-song mistape, which is extremely far from a misstep. Enjoy!
