BUG – “Mechanical Soul” EP (Audio)

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

What can be said about Mechanical Soul, is that it’s far from mechanical in sound and actually feels organic and natural, mature, yet exploratory. Using the moniker of BUG, this keyboard player, songwriter, and producer is one of London’s new talents moving from percolation to boil. Having gotten airplay from tastemakers such as Gilles Peterson and Benji B with the release of his debut single last year, and worked on various mixes, Mechanical Soul has been anticipated by many. The opening title track, “Mechanical Soul,” sets the precedence of the EP, with its hard bass and distorted keys. It seems that as you travel through Mechanical Soul, the sounds soften and we’re taken through a world where sounds of modern funk, soul, hip hop, electronica and melody converge. These instrumentals are great! Check out the medley below, then head over to BUG’s label, Jus Like Music for purchase!

Quadron – “Average Fruit” (BUG Punch UP Remix)

Sunday, November 21st, 2010

It’s initiatives like these that make me love the democratic and organic nature of the Internet, and why I work by trade in this environment. Plug Research and Quadron have set the task for producers to remix their single, “Average Fruit” with the prize being studio time with Robin Hannibal and Coco, and their remix to be featured on Quadron‘s forthcoming EP. Submissions are uploaded to this Soundcloud page. The remixes are fantastic and show just how diverse Quadron‘s audience is. Here’s one of my favourites from by UK producer BUG. He houses the tune up a little, then adds a dirty bass groove as the song progresses. Rotation worthy! Check it out below, then head over to Soundcloud to hear other submissions. Leave comments to helps Quadron in their decision making. Deadline is tomorrow, November 22. And kudos to the artist who did the artwork for the BUG Punch Up Remix cover!

BUG – Cosmic Lab / 20 Winks (Download)

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

The name BUG has been floating around for a while, and I was happy to get this in my in-box this weekend! The 24-year-old Londoner, is a keyboard player, songwriter, and producer whose music is best described as experimental, with elements of hip-hop and neo-soul. “Cosmic Lab” is the first single from the forth-coming album from the new label Jus Like Music Records and is a free download. As his press release says, “Think the smooth richness of the DâM-FunK vibe, the solid construction of a Dilla beat, the electronic wizardry of Flying Lotus and the soulful melodies of Lonnie Liston Smith‘s jazz.” His sound is really smooth; I’m digging it. Check it out below and head over to his Bandcamp page to get your FREE download of “Cosmic Lab” and “20 Winks”!
