“Relative Peace” (Oban Rework) by Kimbra, Young Dreams, Jaga Jazzist

Collaborations come in the most unlikeliest forms. This one is particularly interesting especially when looking what came from it. Jaga Jazzist, an instrumental band from Norway, known largely for their avante guarde approach  to jazz, released their last album Starfire in 2015, featuring the track “Oban.” Fellow Norwegian producer, Young Dreams aka Matias Tellez reworked the track and sent it to Lars Horntveth, member of Jaga Jazzist. He went on to playing the instrumental to Kimbra, who previously loved the original and was thrilled to work with Young Dreams to rework of such a dimensional technicolor track (listen to the original). Young Dreams reworked the instrumental into a psychedelic 70s vibe, where you can hear the influence of the Isley Brothers‘ “Voyage to Atlantis” in the production and melody. Vocally, Kimbra wanted to bring in what she heard from the original, which was longing, and the story she tells within the song is of a relationship torn by one lovers need for stability over living freely and passionately, causing a sense of melancholy, a facade of happiness and “Relative Peace.” Kimbra and Young Dreams create something quite special and is a great illustration of how inspiration takes many forms.
