Neneh Cherry & The Thing – “Accordion” (Video)

A few weeks ago we shared a track from Neneh Cherry‘s new project with jazz ensemble The Thing called, The Cherry Thing, with the cover of Suicide‘s “Dream, Baby Dream.” Now with the unleashing of their second single, a cover of Madlib and MF Doom‘s “Accordion,” is quite incredible. You hear extremely subtle elements of the original but The Thing‘s use of brass instruments turns this track into the blues. The video, directed by Ted Says, states that his treatment was, “to create an atmosphere that would sit well with the unpredictable music of The Thing, but also be playful yet creepy.” And yes, it most definitely is creepy – in a dark setting outside in the woods, laser lighting to alter vision, as Neneh spits MF Doom in song. “Accordion” strikes a cord. With Santigold‘s sophomore album Master of My Make-Believe being released yesterday, what better way to kick off its release than with a visit to the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon show. I’ve always said, there’s something so magical about Santigold‘s work — encased in authenticity, with a pure unadulterated approach that blends all her influences into a remarkable sound of now! Not yet heard the entire album, so I can’t speak on it, but with the star-studded production roster which includes Q-Tip, TV on the Radio‘s Dave Sitek, Boys Noize, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs‘ Nick Zinner, it has to deliver! John Forté – “The Russian Winter” (Documentary Trailer)

It would have been far too easy if John Forté — a Grammy nominated artist at the age of 21 from his participation on The Fugees‘ “Staying Alive” to a convicted felon — made his documentary, The Russian Winter purely a self-referential piece. Instead, he has created a documentary about his opportunity to soujorn the land of Russia in a quest to have his music heard. Organising shows across the country and performing for various charities with a host of other Russian musicians, viewers are given the opportunity experience a musicians world of learnings and challenges. The Russian Winter debuted at the recent Tribeca Film Festival and the next step is for it to be picked up. Check out the trailer below.

Detroit techno/house musician, Kenny Dixon Jr, better known by pseudonym Moodymann, never steers us wrong! Picture This, a release through Scion A/V — an initiative that supports the development of passionate artists as they explore infinite possibilities — is classic Moodymann! It’s soulful, funky, and best of all, moody — providing those continuous dance-laden beats, with a smoothness synonymous with jazz, Brazilian, funk, and soul. The standout on this 8-track album is “Pray for Love,” which has these incredible music changes in tempo, in feel, and in funk. Thundercat‘s official video for “Walkin’” is obscurity at its best. From the Eric Wareheim influence, with juxtaposed visuals and a gallant unapologetic style, the cameo surprises are more than welcomed. Walking through a suburban neighbourhood, Thundercat tenderly sings to video vixen Havana Ginger, who is on his arm, and each house they pass — in Dadaist form — we are shown the world is a vibrant, crazy, circus. Obscure…but we like it!

Evy Jane EP (Audio + Video)

Evy Jane categorise themselves as experimental R&B, while others are deeming them as textured-pop. If we were to compare Evy Jane, they are what Little Dragon started with, minus the soulful vibe and heavy hitting bassline – which therefore makes them a unique listen. They’re more experimental, drawing sounds from UK’s drum and bass, and fusing electronica into it.

Based in Vancouver, Canada, Evy Jane are Evelyn Mason and Jeremiah Klein, who have been working together for the past two years, performing at festivals, with Klein DJing at some of Vancouver’s exclusive parties.

The EP features two original tracks, “SAYSO” and “OHSO” followed by remixes from Canadian producers Max Ulis, Taal Mala, and Andy Dixon Dutch producer Julien Mier, each spinning their own doses of future on the two songs.

Wonderkiss (TK Wonder + Kissey) – “Heartfukk, Part 1″ (Free Download + Video)

It’s been quite some time since Kissey Asplund has graced the pages of Muphoric Sounds, and it’s not without query; we’ve had our eye on her awaiting new music. This little surprised surfaced last week, in the form of Wonderkiss. Wonderkiss is Kissey Asplund, hailing from Sweden, and living in Manhattan, New York and Brooklyn native, TK Wonder.

Having met back in 2008 at The Knitting Factory in New York City, each performing independently — Kissey with Ty Segall and TK Wonder with Taylor McFerrin — it wasn’t until running into each other again a year later during a time where Kissey had started to delve into beat making to produce music for own album, the two decided to meet up in to share musical ideas. Instantly, TK gravitated to Kissey’s sounds, and they gave birth to Wonderkiss. Heartfukk, Part 1 is a walk with sexy electronica, where each song pulsates to a tribal beat as TK Wonder raps and sings. All I can say is, we are digging this!

D’Angelo Live In Stockholm 2012 (Live Video + New Music)

Prayers have been answered. D’Angelo is back! Kicking off the first of his European dates in Stockholm, he has returned with such rigor, it’s as though he never left. Voice strong, looking buff; we cannot wait for the new album (whenever that may be). What has been so skillful in this lead up, is there being no pre-publicity or hype, just simply dates booked and tickets hitting box office. While there’s no talk of when this show will hit the US, it is certain D’Angelo will be gracing your town, very soon.

Mar Variation – “Avril 14″ featuring Szjerdene (Video)

“Avril 14“ is so beautiful; just rocked my world. The intensity of the music with Mar and UK singer Szjerdene‘s incredibly heartfelt delivery, will make you want to run up to the one you love and just hold them. The video documents a beautiful couple preparing for their first child—the excitement, and the love they have for each other is so pure. However, complications arise and shatters their bright world into something that is harrowingly painful. “Avril 14” is a variation of an instrumental by Irish electronic composer Apex Twin. Again, the music is left untouched and vocals are added to breathe more life and dimension to the original composition.

Van Hunt – “Eyes Like Pearls” (Video)

From his latest album, What You Were Hoping For?, is the first video for “Eyes Like Pearls.” Van Hunt says the lyrics to the song came from, ”finding a monster living inside of a girl I was hanging with – and falling in complete, primal love with her. Finding out who someone is – why they are the way they are – and turning their scars into a reason to change my life.” These are the things I love about Hunt‘s vivid songwriting. Somehow, someone’s chaos can give him rectitude. The video shows a man and a woman as they wonder about, deep in thought focusing on their eyes.

If you haven’t purchased What You Were Hoping For? yet, I suggest you do. It’s an electric ride of discovery with profound lyrics that make you go, “Hmmmm…”

Meridian – “Magic” (Video)

Meridian comprises of two young men, Yohimbe Sampson, also from Game Rebellion and Bradley Valentin, a music teacher at Urban Arts. Their union was something rather organic; musicians tend to always be in a creative space, where anything and all things are possible. With Meridian, they say they’ve “found a way to ARTiculate the optimism that exists in triumph and trial.” The video for “Magic” definitely shows that. With an eclectic and ambitious venture, they’ve pulled off something totally creative, bringing us back to a time when music videos are a series of vignettes that piece together in a story of discovery. There’s something very 80s about this track—the catchy hook, gives you a feeling of expansiveness, and the musical arrangement shows a sensitivity that one wouldn’t expect coming from a Game Rebellion solider. Every time Red Bull Music Academy rolls around, I wish I was a musical artist! The chosen few who pass the extensive application process, attend a month long series of seminars where they get to not only learn from some of music’s legends, but also get to create music with the best in the industry. Check out Erykah Badu‘s session at RBMA 2011 in Madrid, where she gives an honest account of her career from being a performance art student, the various players instrumental to her success, giving us great insights to the legendary J Dilla (the story behind Erkyah’s song “Telephone” from New Amerykah Part One (4th World War) will pull at your heart strings), and she talks about her upcoming album that is produced by Flying Lotus. The interview encompasses all that is the musical sensation Erykah Badu is today. Great interview!

J*DaVeY – Whatchalookin@ + Kill 4 Fun (Video)

As we patiently wait for J*DaVey to release their forthcoming album The New Designer Drug, they have given us a little music to build anticipation. This two song teaser, “Whatchalookin@” and “Kill 4 Fun” stays close to what the dynamic duo have been doing of late, embracing an 80s, new wave sound. What I love about this duo is their distinct sense of self and originality. Jack Davey now sporting her baby bump, while uncle Brook D’Leau dotes on; they have a good connection.
