“The Work” – Speech Debelle, featuring Miss Baby Sol

After a four year hiatus, Speech Debelle returns with the soul searching new single, “The Work.” Her debut album Speech Therapy was a recipient of the Mercury Prize Award winning the British album of the year. By her sophomore album Freedom of Speech in 2012, produced by Kwes, Speech Debelle expanded on themes of politics, power, and pleasure with studious poetical flair. However, after its release she decided to step away from music to focus on other passions – her natural zeal for cooking, where she became a semi-finalist on Celebrity Masterchef. She also curated a moving art exhibition that featured art by prisoners for Koestler Trust, entitled The Strength and Vulnerability Bunker that was showcased at Southbank Centre in 2013.

Now returning to her roots in music, the first single “The Work” from her third forthcoming album Tantil Before I Breathe comes with an affirming message that touches on strength, while facing mental challenges and embarking on a physical, emotional, and spiritual journey. Featuring the soulful vocals of Miss Baby Sol, “The Work,” as Speech Debelle states is, “having some sort of awakening in whatever form that may come in; whether it’s about who you’re around, what you want to change in your life, or having some sort of a breakdown, which I had — which was the unravelling.” Produced by Nick Trepka and co-written with Neil Cowley (AdeleEmeli Sandé), “The Work” is an personal song about working through life’s challenges. Tantil Before I Breathe is slated to release sometime in 2016.
